Newton Solney
The dwelling was a Georgian Gentleman’s residence set in extensive grounds in a small South Derbyshire village. The building is Grade II listed and also sits within a Conservation Area. Urban Designs decided to extend the south side of the building as this would have less impact upon the house and it would remain largely unseen from the street and neighbouring properties. The location of the extension also formed a natural infill between existing outbuilding, adjacent glass house and driveway.
The original concept was to form a garden wall, similar to existing walls within the site, linking the existing building to the glasshouse. The wall would then be broken for a section with a contemporary glass structure set behind the wall line. The design then evolved, with the glass structure now following the intended wall line. Traditional details such as saddleback coping and buttresses were incorporated into the design, historically referencing existing garden walls within the site.
